We, the members of your School Board, believe in delivering a quality education for our children while preserving their visual health.
Whereas: Some 40% of the nation's school children develop myopia (nearsightedness) during their school years;
Whereas: Since we enforce compulsory education, schools have an obligation to inform parents, students and teachers about how myopia can be prevented;
Whereas: There is clear evidence that myopia is not inherited but is due to the tremendous and unnatural close-work stress our eyes must deal with in a modern society;
Whereas: Myopia is a leading cause of blindness, and the unnatural elongation of the eye which occurs as myopia develops puts that eye at greater risk of serious eye disease, such as retinal detachment and macular degeneration. The more myopia, the greater the risk;
Whereas: The use of plus lens glasses for close work has been shown to prevent myopia while the minus lenses routinely prescribed for myopia cause the myopia to increase;
Whereas: Eye doctors and the optical industry refuse to encourage prevention and claim erroneously that myopia is inherited;
Whereas: This School Board wishes to lead the world in the goal of preventing any schoolchild from developing myopia;
Therefore, we resolve that to preserve the vision of our children, the School Board hereby:
1. Appoints the International Myopia Prevention Assn.(IMPA), with headquarters in Ligonier, PA, to develop and implement our Myopia Prevention Project.
2. Directs all school employees to follow the guidelines of IMPA.
3. Refuses to accept favors from the optical industry since their goals are incompatible with prevention.
